Chapter 4

Chapter 4: The Collision
Lily was halfway to Table Four, her eyes fixed entirely on the chocolate petit fours, making sure they didn't slide on their porcelain plates. She was so focused on her task, humming the tune of her ballet music under her breath, that she didn't notice the sea of people parting near the entrance.
David Harrington was walking at a brisk, authoritative pace, his eyes still glued to his glowing screen. He was flanked by Thomas and two large security guards who were too busy looking out for approaching executives to notice a small, eight-year-old girl crossing their path.
"Thomas, tell the Tokyo branch that if they don't finalize the numbers by midnight, I'm pulling the deal," David said loudly, stepping sharply to his left to avoid a waiter.
He didn't look down.
David’s heavy shoulder brushed violently against Lily’s small frame. The sudden impact sent the little girl spinning.
"Oh!" Lily cried out.
The silver tray slipped from her grasp. Time seemed to slow down as the delicate porcelain plates, the chocolate desserts, and the heavy silver tray plummeted toward the polished marble floor.

CRASH.
The sound of shattering porcelain echoed through the massive ballroom, sharp and violent, instantly cutting through the soft string music and polite chatter. The quartet stopped playing mid-note. The entire room fell into a dead, suffocating silence.
