Chapter 5: Shattered Porcelain

Lily stood frozen, her small shoulders trembling as she stared at the mess of shattered plates, smeared chocolate, and the dented silver tray at David Harrington's expensive leather shoes.

Instead of apologizing, or even expressing surprise, David looked down at his shoes—miraculously untouched—and then glared at the terrified little girl. His face contorted in a dark scowl.

"Watch where you are going!" David barked, his deep voice carrying easily across the silent room. "Are you blind?"

Lily shrank back, her lower lip quivering. A tear spilled over her eyelashes, tracing a line down her cheek.

"You’ve ruined the evening," David continued loudly, his irritation unmasked. "Who let a clumsy child serve food in the first place? This is a high-society event, not a playground."

The frightened little girl burst into tears, covering her face with her small hands.

Before David could utter another word, a flash of emerald green cut through the crowd. Sarah pushed past the gawking socialites and immediately dropped to her knees right in the middle of the mess. She didn't look at the billionaire. She didn't look at the broken plates. She only looked at her daughter.

Sarah wrapped her arms tightly around Lily, pulling the sobbing girl into her chest. She stroked Lily's hair, her voice a calm, soothing anchor in the tense room.

"It’s okay, sweetheart," Sarah whispered, pressing a kiss to her temple. "It was just an accident. You're perfectly fine. I've got you."

"I'm... I'm sorry, Mommy," Lily sobbed.

"You have nothing to be sorry for," Sarah replied smoothly, her voice carrying just enough volume for the surrounding elite to hear.

Several guests looked highly uncomfortable, shifting their weight and glancing away. Yet, intimidated by Harrington's immense wealth and power, no one spoke up. The silence was deafening.
