Chapter 2: The Royal Crescent

The Royal Crescent Ballroom was a masterpiece of Gilded Age architecture, brought into the modern era with exquisite care. Three massive crystal chandeliers hung from the frescoed ceiling, casting a warm, golden glow over the hundreds of elite guests. Waiters in crisp black tuxedos moved seamlessly through the crowd, carrying silver trays of champagne and delicate hors d'oeuvres.

Soft string music drifted through the air, provided by a live quartet nestled in the corner of the expansive room. Sarah and Lily stepped out of the backstage corridor and stood near the edge of the grand floor. The sheer scale of the event was breathtaking.

"Wow," Lily breathed, her eyes darting from the sparkling dresses of the socialites to the massive floral arrangements of white orchids and hydrangeas.

"It is beautiful, isn't it?" Sarah agreed, keeping a protective hand on Lily’s shoulder.

Mr. Sterling, the frantic but well-meaning event manager, hurried over to them, wiping his brow with a silk handkerchief. "Ah, Mrs. Hayes! And little Miss Lily! The program is running beautifully, just beautifully. Lily, my dear, your ballet performance is scheduled right after the keynote speech. The children are currently taking some complimentary dessert trays out to the sponsor tables as a symbolic gesture of gratitude. Would you like to join them to shake off the nerves?"

Lily looked at her mother, who gave an encouraging nod. "It might help take your mind off the dance," Sarah suggested.

"Okay," Lily said bravely. Mr. Sterling handed her a small, lightweight silver tray holding half a dozen delicate porcelain plates, each carrying an intricate chocolate petit four.

"Just walk slowly to Table Four, smile, and set it down," Mr. Sterling instructed. "You're doing a wonderful job for the charity, sweetheart."

As Lily carefully began her walk across the polished marble floor, holding the tray like a precious treasure, Sarah stood near the edge of the stage, her heart swelling with pride. Everything was perfect.
