Chapter 9 - The Line Blurs

The dynamic in the mansion shifted after that morning. The strict lines between employer and employee began to blur, melting into something much deeper and infinitely more dangerous.
Dominic started coming home earlier. He would join Cassidy and Bella for dinner, sitting at the small kitchen table rather than the massive formal dining room. He helped Bella with her piano practice, and he spent hours talking with Cassidy about art, books, and a life outside the syndicate.
One evening, after a particularly grueling meeting with his capos, Dominic found Cassidy sitting on the terrace overlooking the lake. Bella was already asleep.
“You look exhausted,” Cassidy noted softly as he slumped into the chair beside her.
“Running a city is a tedious business,” Dominic sighed, running a hand through his dark hair.
“Why do you do it?” she asked, genuinely curious. “You have enough money to leave. To take Bella somewhere safe.”
Dominic looked out at the dark water. “My father built this empire. If I walk away, the vacuum of power will cause a war that would tear Chicago apart. Thousands of innocents would be caught in the crossfire. I stay because I am the only monster strong enough to keep the other monsters at bay.”
Cassidy looked at his hands—hands that had ordered violence, but also hands that gently folded origami cranes for his daughter.
“You’re not a monster, Dominic,” she said quietly.
He turned to look at her, a bitter smile on his lips. “You only see the man inside these walls, Cassidy. You haven't seen what I do in the shadows.”
“I see a father,” she insisted, reaching out to touch his arm. “I see a man who protects the people he cares about.”
Dominic’s eyes darkened. The air between them pulled taut, thick with unspoken desire. He leaned closer, the distance between their lips vanishing.
“You make me want to be a better man,” he whispered, his breath warm against her skin.

He kissed her. It was slow, desperate, and filled with a profound hunger. Cassidy melted into him, her hands tangling in his hair, pulling him closer. For a fleeting, perfect moment, the mafia king and the waitress were just a man and a woman, lost in each other.
But a flash of headlights turning into the long driveway broke the spell. The real world was closing in.
