Chapter 3 - The Gilded Cage

|

The Valenti estate was not a house; it was a fortress disguised as a palace.

Located on the exclusive North Shore of Chicago, the sprawling limestone mansion overlooked the crashing, gray waters of Lake Michigan. Ten-foot iron gates groaned open as the armored SUV pulled through the next morning. Cassidy stared out the window, completely overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the wealth surrounding her.

Manicured lawns, stone fountains, and heavily armed security guards patrolling the perimeter with tactical precision.

She stepped out of the car, wearing her best—and only—professional blouse and skirt. She felt entirely out of place, a sparrow wandering into a lion's den.

“Welcome to the estate, Miss Tate,” a crisp, cultured voice called out.

An older woman in a severe gray suit walked down the front steps. “I am Mrs. Gable, the estate manager. Mr. Valenti is currently on a conference call. I will show you to Bella’s wing.”

“Thank you,” Cassidy said nervously.

The interior of the mansion was breathtaking. Marble floors, vaulted ceilings painted with Renaissance frescoes, and priceless art lining the long corridors. But despite the beauty, the house felt cold. There was no laughter. No music. It felt like a museum where nothing was allowed to live.

Mrs. Gable led her to the east wing. “Bella’s schedule is strict. Tutors at nine. Piano at eleven. You are to accompany her everywhere. You do not speak to Mr. Valenti’s associates. You do not ask questions about the family business. Is that understood?”

“Yes, ma'am.”

They entered a massive, sunlit playroom. Bella was sitting on a plush rug, carefully building a massive tower out of wooden blocks.

When Cassidy walked in, Bella dropped the block she was holding. Her face lit up in a brilliant, silent smile. The little girl scrambled to her feet and ran across the room, wrapping her small arms around Cassidy’s legs.

Cassidy melted, dropping to her knees to hug the child back.

“Hi, Bella,” Cassidy whispered.

From the doorway, Dominic watched them. He had ended his call early to observe his new employee. Seeing his deeply traumatized daughter willingly embrace a stranger sent a shockwave through his chest.

For two years, he had surrounded his daughter with guards, money, and doctors. He had built an empire of blood and steel to keep her safe. But looking at Cassidy Tate, he realized that what Bella truly needed was something he could not buy.

She needed a mother.
