Chapter 10 - The Ambush

|
The following Saturday, Cassidy took Bella to the Field Museum. It was a rare outing, approved by Dominic only because they were accompanied by four heavily armed security guards.
Bella was fascinated by the dinosaur exhibits, her small hands sketching furiously in a notebook while Cassidy pointed out the facts on the placards. For a few hours, they were just a normal family enjoying a weekend in the city.
But Vincenzo’s treachery had set a trap.
As they exited the museum, stepping out into the bright Chicago afternoon, the atmosphere suddenly shifted. The lead security guard, a veteran named Marcus, tapped his earpiece, his face turning pale.
“We have a problem,” Marcus barked, drawing his weapon. “The perimeter is compromised. Get them to the SUV. Now!”
Before Cassidy could react, the screech of tires echoed across the plaza. Two black vans slammed onto the curb, blocking their exit.
Men in tactical gear poured out, raising automatic weapons.
“Bella, get down!” Cassidy screamed.
Gunfire erupted, shattering the peaceful afternoon. Screams filled the air as tourists scattered in terror. The Valenti guards returned fire, engaging in a brutal, chaotic shootout on the museum steps.
Cassidy didn't think about her own safety. She tackled Bella to the concrete, throwing her entire body over the little girl, shielding her from the hail of bullets flying over their heads.
“Hold onto me, sweetie!” Cassidy yelled over the deafening noise, pressing Bella’s head to her chest.
Glass shattered above them. A bullet grazed Cassidy’s shoulder, tearing through her jacket and leaving a burning trail of pain, but she didn't let go. She squeezed her eyes shut, praying to a god she hadn't spoken to in years.
“Move! Move!” Marcus yelled, providing covering fire as he dragged Cassidy and Bella toward the armored SUV.
They scrambled into the back seat, slamming the heavy ballistic doors shut just as a barrage of bullets hammered against the reinforced windows. The driver slammed on the gas, tearing through the plaza and leaving the ambush behind.

Cassidy sat shaking in the back seat, her shoulder bleeding, holding a terrified, sobbing Bella tightly in her arms.
They had survived. But the war had officially begun.
