Chapter 8 - The Delivery

|
The next four hours dragged on with agonizing slowness. Wade paced the hallway outside the surgical ICU, a predator waiting for a delivery.
At exactly 6:15 AM, the heavy double doors of the ICU wing swung open. A team of paramedics rushed through, flanked by two of Wade’s most trusted security guards. In the center of the chaotic huddle was a specialized, humming medical cooler.
Audrey shot up from the couch, running to the doorway, her hands flying to her mouth as she wept with overwhelming joy.
Dr. Evans emerged from the scrub room, looking energized despite the sleepless night. He approached the cooler, verifying the medical tags.
“It’s a perfect match, Mr. Mercer,” the surgeon said, looking at Wade with profound awe. “I don't know how you managed to get a priority organ transported from Seattle in a private jet overnight, but you just saved your son’s life.”
“Just do your job, Doctor,” Wade said, his voice thick with emotion he refused to show. “Don't make any mistakes.”
“We’re taking him into the OR right now,” Dr. Evans promised, turning back to his team.
Audrey threw herself into Wade’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “You did it, Wade. You actually did it.”
Wade held her tight, resting his chin on top of her head. He watched the surgical doors close behind the cooler, feeling a massive, crushing weight lift from his chest. His son was going to live.
But the relief was fleeting.
Silas approached quietly, holding a secure tablet. He looked grim.
“Boss. We have a problem.”
Wade gently pulled away from Audrey. “Stay here, sweetheart. The surgery will take hours.”
He walked down the hall with Silas, out of earshot. “What is it?”
“The Russians didn't just take the ports,” Silas whispered, showing Wade the tablet screen. It displayed live satellite footage of the hospital perimeter. “Roman’s men are massing outside. They’ve surrounded the building.”
Wade frowned, his eyes narrowing. “I signed the paperwork. The deal is done. Why are they mobilizing?”
“Because Roman isn't a fool,” Silas explained grimly. “He knows you’ll come for him the moment the baby is safe. He’s not going to wait for you to attack. He’s going to execute you, Audrey, and the kid right here in the hospital before the surgery is even finished.”

Wade’s blood turned to ice. The Russians were going to breach the ICU.
“Lock down every entrance,” Wade commanded, pulling his weapon. “We defend this floor to the last man.”
