Chapter 16 - The Fortress

The Mercer Estate was not just a home; it was a sprawling, impenetrable compound located on the affluent North Shore, overlooking the vast expanse of Lake Michigan.
When the convoy of armored SUVs pulled through the massive wrought-iron gates, Audrey felt a profound sense of safety wash over her. The perimeter was patrolled by highly trained, loyal guards, but the interior of the property was breathtakingly beautiful.
Wade had spent the last year maintaining the house exactly as Audrey had left it, hoping against logic that she might return.
He carried Leo, who was still recovering but growing stronger every day, through the grand front doors. The household staff, who had been fiercely loyal to Audrey during their marriage, wept openly when they saw her return with a child.
“I had the west wing converted into a nursery,” Wade said softly, guiding Audrey up the sweeping marble staircase. “I didn't know if it was a boy or a girl, so I kept the colors neutral.”
Audrey stopped in the doorway of the nursery. It was a masterpiece of soft creams and gentle greens, filled with the finest furniture, toys, and a massive, custom-built crib. It was the room of a prince.
“Wade, it’s beautiful,” Audrey breathed, tears pricking her eyes.
Wade gently placed the sleeping baby into the crib, pulling a soft blanket over him. He turned to Audrey, his expression suddenly vulnerable, stripping away the armor of the mafia boss completely.
“I spent every night for a year sitting in this empty room, Audrey,” Wade confessed, his voice dropping to a raw whisper. “Wondering where you were. Wondering if I would ever see you again.”
Audrey’s heart ached. She walked over, placing her hands on his broad chest.
“I thought I was doing the right thing by running,” she admitted, looking up into his intense gray eyes. “I thought I was protecting him from your enemies. But I was just punishing both of us out of fear.”
“You don't have to be afraid anymore,” Wade promised, his hands coming up to cup her face gently. “I eradicated the threats. Julian is gone. Roman is dead. The Commission knows that my family is entirely off-limits.”
He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers.
“I love you, Audrey. I have never stopped loving you. Let me be the father he deserves. Let me be the husband you need.”
Audrey looked at the man who had burned the city down to save their child. She didn't see a monster; she saw a protector.

“I love you, Wade,” she whispered, closing the distance between them.
Their lips met in a desperate, passionate kiss, washing away a year of pain, secrets, and loneliness. It was a promise sealed in the quiet sanctuary of their son’s nursery.
