Chapter 13 - The Traitor's Fall

|

Wade didn't take an army. He took Silas and three of his most lethal enforcers.

They left the hospital heavily guarded, ensuring Audrey and Leo were surrounded by an impenetrable wall of loyal men. Wade washed the blood from his hands, put on a fresh black overcoat to hide the bullet graze on his shoulder, and stepped into the rainy Chicago night.

“Where to, Boss?” Silas asked, gripping the steering wheel of the SUV.

“Julian’s penthouse,” Wade stated coldly. “He’s arrogant. He won't run until he gets confirmation that I’m dead. We’re going to give him a surprise.”

They arrived at the luxury high-rise in River North twenty minutes later. Wade bypassed the front desk, using a master keycard to access the private executive elevator.

They rode in silence to the penthouse level.

When the doors slid open, Wade didn't hesitate. He kicked the heavy oak doors of Julian’s apartment off their hinges with a devastating, explosive force.

Julian was sitting on a plush leather sofa, pouring a glass of expensive champagne, celebrating his impending promotion. When he saw Wade standing in the doorway, very much alive and looking like the Grim Reaper, the champagne flute slipped from his fingers, shattering on the hardwood floor.

“Wade!” Julian gasped, scrambling backward over the sofa in sheer terror. “How... how are you alive? The Bratva squad—”

“Are currently bleeding out on a hospital floor,” Wade finished smoothly, walking slowly into the luxurious room. Silas and the enforcers secured the exits, locking Julian in a cage of his own making.

“Boss, please, let me explain!” Julian wept, dropping to his knees, his hands raised in surrender. “Roman forced me! He threatened my family!”

“You don't have a family, Julian,” Wade said quietly, stopping right in front of the kneeling traitor. “But I do. And you used my dying infant son to leverage a business deal.”

Wade didn't yell. He didn't draw a weapon. He simply reached down, grabbed Julian by the lapels of his expensive suit, and dragged him to his feet.

Wade dragged the screaming, thrashing traitor across the expensive hardwood floor toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the city.

“You wanted my empire so badly, Julian,” Wade whispered, pressing the man’s face against the cold glass. “Take a good look at it. It’s the last thing you’ll ever see.”

Wade didn't shoot him. He turned to Silas.

“Take him to the South Side ports,” Wade ordered, his voice devoid of all mercy. “Put him in a shipping container. Weld the doors shut. Let him starve in the darkness he tried to condemn my family to.”

Julian’s screams echoed in the hallway as the enforcers dragged him away.

Wade straightened his coat. “Now. Let’s go find the Russian.”
