Chapter 4 - The Shadow Network

|

Wade guided Audrey into a private waiting room, placing a heavy security detail outside the door. He sat her down on a vinyl couch, wrapping his suit jacket around her shivering shoulders.

“Wade, what are you going to do?” Audrey asked, her voice raspy from crying. “You can’t just buy an organ. It doesn't work that way.”

“In your world, it doesn't,” Wade said softly, kneeling in front of her and taking her cold hands in his. “In my world, everything has a price. And there is nothing I will not do to save our son.”

He stood up, pulled out his encrypted phone, and walked out into the hallway.

“Silas,” Wade barked into the receiver.

“Boss, the floor is secure,” Silas answered immediately.

“I don't care about the floor right now. I need you to contact The Broker. Tell him I need a pediatric heart, compatible with a ten-month-old infant. I don't care what hospital it comes from, I don't care what list it bypasses, and I don't care who gets bribed.”

“Wade, The Broker deals in international black markets,” Silas warned, hesitating. “If the Commission finds out you’re moving that kind of heat through the city, they’ll ask questions.”

“Let them ask,” Wade snarled. “Offer twenty million dollars. Cash. Tell him he has exactly twelve hours to locate a donor match, or I will dismantle his entire operation piece by piece.”

“Understood. I’ll make the call.”

Wade hung up the phone, running a hand through his dark hair. The reality of his son’s existence was finally sinking in. He had a boy. An heir. A tiny piece of himself and the only woman he had ever loved, currently lying on an operating table fighting for his life.

He walked over to the large glass window overlooking the Chicago skyline. The rain was still coming down in sheets.

Suddenly, his phone vibrated again. It wasn't Silas.

It was an unknown, restricted number.

Wade answered, his instincts instantly flaring. “Who is this?”

“Congratulations on the new addition to your family, Wade,” a chilling, deeply accented voice purred through the speaker. “It’s a shame he’s so fragile.”

Wade’s blood turned to ice. It was Roman Sokolov. The ruthless head of the Russian Bratva, and Wade’s most dangerous rival.

“How do you know about him?” Wade whispered.
