Chapter 1 - The Stranger on the Line

|

“Mr. Mercer?”

The voice on the other end of the line was female, but it didn’t belong to Audrey. It was clinical, rushed, and laced with an underlying tension that immediately made Wade’s blood run entirely cold.

“Who is this?” Wade demanded, his voice a low, lethal rumble that echoed in the quiet confines of the descending elevator. “Where is Audrey?”

“My name is Clara. I’m the charge nurse at the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at Mercy Children’s Hospital,” the woman explained, her breath hitching slightly. “Your ex-wife dropped her phone in the hallway. She is currently being restrained by our hospital security staff.”

Wade’s hand tightened around his phone so hard the glass screen protector cracked under his thumb. “Restrained? If a single guard puts a hand on her, I will buy your hospital and fire everyone in it. What happened?”

“Sir, she was hysterical,” the nurse pleaded, clearly intimidated by the sheer menace radiating through the speaker. “Her son’s heart rate plummeted. The surgical team had to crash him into an emergency bypass. She tried to physically fight the doctors to get into the operating room. We had to hold her back for the child’s safety.”

“Her son.”

The words tasted like ash in Wade’s mouth. For a year, he had believed Audrey left him because she couldn't handle the violence of his world. She had packed her bags in the dead of night, signed the divorce papers through a proxy, and vanished. He had let her go to keep her safe. He never knew she was pregnant.

“How old is the boy?” Wade asked, his voice shaking for the first time in a decade.

“He’s ten months old, Mr. Mercer. His name is Leo.”

Ten months. The timeline locked perfectly into place. She had run away while carrying his heir.

“Listen to me very carefully, Clara,” Wade said, stepping out of the elevator and into the torrential Chicago rain where his armored SUV was waiting. “I am five minutes away. Tell your security team to release my wife immediately. If she is crying when I arrive, I will hold you personally responsible.”

He didn't wait for a response. He tossed the phone into the passenger seat.

“Mercy Children’s Hospital,” Wade ordered his driver. “Run every red light. If anyone gets in our way, hit them.”
