Chapter 6 - The Devil's Bargain

|

Audrey’s head snapped up, her green eyes wide with desperate, blinding hope. She scrambled off the vinyl couch, grabbing his hands.

“You found one? Wade, are you serious? Is Leo going to live?”

“I found one,” Wade promised, forcing a gentle smile to mask the violent storm raging inside him. “It’s coming from Seattle. It will be here by morning.”

Audrey broke down into fresh, overwhelming tears, but this time they were tears of pure relief. She threw her arms around his neck, kissing his cheek repeatedly. “Thank you. Oh my God, thank you, Wade. I’m so sorry I kept him from you. I was so wrong.”

Wade held her tightly, closing his eyes as a profound, agonized guilt washed over him. He was making a deal with the devil, and the consequences would bring a war directly to their doorstep.

He gently pulled away. “I need to make the arrangements, Audrey. Stay here with the guards. Do not leave this room.”

Wade walked back out into the sterile hallway and dialed Roman’s restricted number.

“I accept,” Wade said the moment the line connected.

“Excellent choice, Wade,” Roman purred triumphantly. “I knew you were a sentimental fool. I will send my lawyers with the transfer deeds to the hospital in three hours. Once you sign the ports over, the jet takes off from Seattle.”

“If that heart is damaged, or if the flight is delayed by a single minute, I will burn you alive, Roman.”

“Just have the ink ready, Mr. Mercer,” the Russian replied before hanging up.

Wade pocketed his phone and immediately signaled Silas, who was standing guard near the elevator banks.

“Boss? Did The Broker pull through?” Silas asked eagerly.

“No. Cancel The Broker,” Wade ordered, his voice dropping to a lethal, hushed whisper. “Roman Sokolov has the heart. I am signing over the South Side ports to get it.”

Silas’s eyes widened in sheer panic. “The ports? Boss, you can’t do that! The Commission will demand your head! The Russians will use those docks to import enough weapons to wipe our entire family out!”

“I don't care about the Commission, Silas,” Wade growled, grabbing his underboss by the lapels. “My son is dying. But listen to me very carefully. I am going to sign the papers. The heart will arrive. And the moment my son’s chest is closed and he is safe...”

Wade’s eyes turned pitch black.

“We are going to slaughter every single Russian in this city and take my ports back.”
