Chapter 8 - The Offer

|

Nora sat down slowly, pulling the soft cashmere robe tighter around herself. Lorenzo sat in the chair opposite her, leaning forward, resting his elbows on his knees.

"Mrs. Gable has been permanently removed from this estate," Lorenzo announced, his voice carrying an unmistakable, dark finality. "The rest of the staff is currently undergoing a rigorous vetting process by my security team. Anyone who participated in neglecting my father will be dismissed immediately."

Nora’s eyes widened. She had inadvertently caused a massive upheaval in the household.

"But you," Lorenzo continued, looking directly at her, "you have proven your loyalty and your character. I want to offer you a position."

"I can't clean anymore, sir," Nora admitted quietly, resting her hand on her pregnant belly. "The doctor said—"

"I am not asking you to clean, Nora," Lorenzo interrupted gently. "I am offering you the position of my father's primary companion and caretaker. You will not perform any physical labor. You will sit with him, read to him, and ensure his needs are met by the new nursing staff. You will oversee his care."

Nora stared at him, completely stunned.

"In return," Lorenzo stated, his tone becoming completely professional, "I will pay you a salary that reflects the importance of the position. You will remain in the guest suite. And when your daughter is born, she will have the absolute best medical care and resources available. She will never want for anything."

It was a staggering offer. It was complete financial security, safety, and a future for her unborn child, all handed to her by the most dangerous man in the city.

"Why are you doing this for me?" Nora asked, her voice barely a whisper.

"Because in my world, loyalty and genuine kindness are rarer than diamonds," Lorenzo answered honestly, a profound seriousness in his gray eyes. "You protected the King when he was vulnerable. The family protects its own. Do you accept?"

Tears spilled down Nora’s cheeks. She nodded slowly, overwhelmingly grateful. "Yes. Yes, Mr. Moretti."

"Call me Lorenzo," he smiled faintly.

Over the next few months, life at the estate transformed into something beautiful.

Nora spent her days in the newly renovated room 4B. Lorenzo had ordered the dark, depressing room entirely overhauled. Huge windows let in the sunlight, the fireplace roared constantly, and comfortable furniture replaced the rusted medical equipment.

Giovanni thrived under the new care. Though he still couldn't speak, the light had returned to his dark eyes. He watched Nora with a deep, grandfatherly affection as her belly grew larger.

Lorenzo, too, became a constant presence in their lives. He spent less time in his Manhattan penthouse and more time at the upstate estate, often joining Nora and his father for dinner in the east wing. He was protective, attentive, and surprisingly gentle.

But peace in the mafia world is always an illusion, a fragile glass house waiting for the first stone to be thrown.
