Chapter 13 - The Shadow Summons

|

The news of Lorenzo Moretti’s impending marriage to a civilian woman—a former maid, no less—sent shockwaves through the criminal underworld of the eastern seaboard.

To the rival families, it was perceived as a massive, glaring vulnerability. The Ice King had supposedly grown soft.

Three weeks before the wedding, Lorenzo was in his study, reviewing the final security protocols for the ceremony, when Dante, his head of security, entered with a grim expression.

"Boss," Dante reported, his voice tight with tension. "We received a summons from the Commission in New York."

Lorenzo frowned, setting his pen down. The Commission was the governing body of the five most powerful mafia families. They rarely convened unless there was a dispute over territory or a threat to the syndicate's stability.

"What is the agenda?" Lorenzo asked coldly.

"They want to discuss the 'legitimacy' of your upcoming marriage," Dante explained, clearly disgusted by the insult. "They are demanding that you attend a sit-down to prove that your new wife won't be a liability to the shared business interests. They think she’s a weak link."

Lorenzo’s gray eyes turned to absolute, terrifying ice.

"They dare to question my choices?" Lorenzo growled, standing up, the lethal mafia don returning instantly.

"Rumor is, the Falcone family is pushing the hardest," Dante added. "They want to use this as an excuse to strip you of the southern shipping ports, claiming you are too distracted by domestic life to protect the routes."

Lorenzo walked to the window, staring out at the manicured grounds where Nora was currently pushing Lily in a stroller. A dark, murderous fire ignited in his chest.

"Prepare the tactical teams," Lorenzo ordered softly. "I will attend their little summit. But I am not going to ask for their approval. I am going to remind them exactly why they should fear me."

The summit was held in a highly secure, subterranean vault beneath a luxury hotel in Manhattan.

Lorenzo entered the room flanked by six heavily armed, loyalist enforcers. He wore a sharp, tailored black suit, his expression a mask of pure, unadulterated violence.

The heads of the four other families sat around a massive circular table. They looked up, expecting the distracted, softened man the rumors had promised.

They were gravely mistaken.

"Lorenzo," the head of the Falcone family sneered, leaning back in his chair. "We were beginning to think you were too busy picking out flower arrangements to attend to syndicate business."

Lorenzo didn't sit down. He walked slowly around the table, a predator circling its prey.

"I heard you had concerns about my impending marriage, Falcone," Lorenzo said, his voice dropping into a chilling, mechanical register.

"We all have concerns, Lorenzo," another boss chimed in. "You are elevating a peasant to the rank of Donna. She knows nothing of our world. She is a liability. The Commission demands that you sign a post-nuptial agreement guaranteeing she will never have access to family funds or secrets."

Lorenzo stopped walking. He stared at the men who dared to dictate terms regarding his family.

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick, leather-bound folder, tossing it violently onto the center of the table.

"That folder contains the encrypted routing numbers to every single offshore account the Falcone family uses to launder their money," Lorenzo stated coldly, enjoying the sudden, terrified gasps from the men at the table.

"How did you get those?" Falcone demanded, jumping out of his chair, his face pale.

"My wife is not a liability," Lorenzo smiled, a dark, terrifying expression. "My wife possesses a highly observant mind. While scrubbing floors for my cruel housekeeper, she noticed the discrepancies in the delivery schedules. She connected the dots that my own accountants missed. She uncovered your little embezzlement scheme from our shared ports, Falcone."

The other bosses turned to look at Falcone with murderous intent. Stealing from the shared ports was an unforgivable offense.

"You wanted proof that my wife is an asset?" Lorenzo roared, his voice echoing off the vault walls. "She just handed me the keys to destroy your entire operation! She is untouchable! And if any of you ever speak her name with disrespect again, I will personally burn your empires to the ground!"
