Chapter 11 - The Arrival

|

Lorenzo washed his hands in the master bathroom, ensuring every trace of the basement was scrubbed from his skin before he went to see Nora. He wanted to protect her from the darkness of his world, not drag her into it.

He walked down the hall to the secure inner wing.

As he approached the suite, the door burst open. Dante, the head of security, rushed out, looking unusually panicked.

"Boss," Dante gasped. "It's time. Her water broke."

Lorenzo’s heart hammered against his ribs. The cold, calculating mafia don instantly vanished, replaced by a terrified, protective man.

He sprinted into the suite.

Nora was leaning against the bedpost, breathing heavily through a massive contraction, her face pale and drenched in sweat.

"Lorenzo," she cried out when she saw him, reaching out a trembling hand.

He crossed the room in two strides, wrapping his arms securely around her, holding her steady. "I'm right here. I've got you."

"It hurts," she gasped, gripping his tailored suit jacket tightly.

"The medical team is already here," Lorenzo assured her, guiding her gently onto the bed.

He had spared no expense. He had converted the adjacent guest room into a state-of-the-art delivery suite, staffed by the finest obstetricians and nurses money could buy. They rushed in, quickly setting up the monitors and equipment.

For the next six hours, Lorenzo refused to leave her side. The man who commanded an army of killers sat by the bed, holding a damp washcloth to her forehead, murmuring words of encouragement and fiercely squeezing her hand through every agonizing contraction.

In the adjoining room, Giovanni sat in his wheelchair, waiting anxiously, his dark eyes fixed on the door, praying silently for the woman who had saved him.

Finally, a sharp, piercing cry echoed through the suite, shattering the tension.

"It's a beautiful, healthy baby girl," the doctor announced, smiling as he quickly cleaned the screaming infant.

Nora collapsed back against the pillows, entirely exhausted but weeping with pure, overwhelming joy.

The nurses wrapped the baby in a soft pink blanket and handed her gently to Nora.

Lorenzo leaned over, staring down at the tiny, perfect face of the newborn. He felt a profound, unexpected surge of emotion swell in his chest. He reached out, his large, calloused finger gently stroking the baby's soft cheek. The infant stopped crying, blinking her dark eyes open to look at him.

"She's perfect," Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

Nora looked up at him, tears streaming down her face. "Her name is Lily."

"Lily," Lorenzo repeated softly, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking across his hardened features. "It suits her perfectly."

Lorenzo leaned down and pressed a tender, lingering kiss to Nora’s forehead. He wasn't just protecting a maid anymore; he was protecting his family.
