Chapter 12 - A Grandfather's Blessing

|

A few hours later, the chaos of the delivery had subsided. The medical staff quietly retreated, leaving Nora to rest peacefully in the luxurious bed, holding a sleeping Lily against her chest.

The heavy oak door opened softly.

Lorenzo pushed his father’s wheelchair into the room, maneuvering it carefully to the bedside.

Giovanni’s eyes were wide, shining with unshed tears as he looked down at the tiny bundle in Nora’s arms. The ruthless former Don, a man who had built an empire on blood and fear, looked entirely overwhelmed by the fragile innocence of the newborn.

Nora smiled weakly, shifting her position. She gently lifted the swaddled baby and lowered her carefully into Giovanni’s lap, supporting the infant's weight with her own hands.

"Meet Lily, John," Nora whispered warmly, using the name she had called him when she thought he was just a forgotten old man.

Giovanni stared down at the baby. His frail, trembling right hand slowly, agonizingly lifted from the armrest. With immense, painstaking effort, he extended his index finger and gently touched the baby’s tiny, clenched fist.

Lily stirred, her small fingers opening to instinctively wrap around the old man’s finger.

A single, thick tear escaped Giovanni’s dark eyes, rolling slowly down his weathered cheek. His lip trembled.

Lorenzo watched the interaction from the foot of the bed, his heart aching with a profound, beautiful sorrow. His father, trapped in a silent prison, was experiencing the pure joy of a grandfather.

"She will be protected, Papa," Lorenzo vowed softly, his voice a low, fierce rumble. "She will never know the darkness of our world. I swear it."

Giovanni looked up at his son, his eyes burning with absolute, unwavering approval. He tapped his finger twice against the armrest.

Over the next few months, Lily became the undisputed center of the Moretti estate.

The sprawling, heavily fortified mansion, once a cold fortress of mafia politics and paranoia, was suddenly filled with the soft sounds of lullabies and the scent of baby powder. The hardened, heavily armed guards who patrolled the perimeter melted entirely when Nora carried the baby through the gardens, often arguing over who got to hold her while Nora rested.

But it was Lorenzo who surprised everyone the most.

The terrifying, ruthless boss of the syndicate spent hours in the nursery, holding the sleeping infant against his broad chest while he read through complex financial ledgers. He was fiercely protective, ensuring that every toy, every blanket, and every piece of clothing was inspected and sterilized.

Nora watched him one evening as he sat in the rocking chair, singing a soft Italian lullaby to Lily.

She leaned against the doorframe, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, undeniable love for the man who had rescued them.

"You are going to spoil her," Nora smiled, stepping into the room.

Lorenzo looked up, his gray eyes soft and unguarded. "She deserves to be spoiled. She is a princess."

He stood up, gently placing the sleeping baby into her crib, and walked over to Nora. He wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.

"I was thinking," Lorenzo murmured, his breath warm against her neck. "The estate is incredibly large for just three people. Perhaps we should make it official."

Nora’s breath hitched. She looked up into his intense eyes. "Official?"

Lorenzo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, black velvet box. He didn't drop to one knee; he simply opened the box, revealing a massive, flawless diamond ring that sparkled fiercely in the dim light of the nursery.

"Marry me, Nora," Lorenzo requested, his voice a deep, absolute command fueled by desperate love. "Let me give Lily my name. Let me give you the world."

Tears spilled over her lashes. The girl who had scrubbed floors to survive was being offered a kingdom.

"Yes," Nora whispered, throwing her arms around his neck, kissing him deeply. "Yes, Lorenzo."
