Chapter 5 - The Silent Observer

|

Lorenzo stared at the small, folded note in his hand, the pieces of a massive, silent puzzle rapidly falling into place.

John.

The staff hadn't even bothered to teach the new maid the correct name of the former Don. They had dismissed him as a decrepit relative, an inconvenience. And Mrs. Gable had clearly lied about his care.

But the pregnant maid, Nora—the woman he had just rescued from the dining room floor—had been sneaking into this freezing room, bringing his father hot food, buying him blankets, and treating him with dignity while everyone else ignored him.

Lorenzo looked down at his father.

Giovanni’s eyes were intense, burning with an uncharacteristic fire. He looked at the note in his son's hand, then looked directly into Lorenzo’s eyes, holding his gaze with absolute, terrifying clarity.

"She took care of you," Lorenzo whispered, realizing the magnitude of what the young maid had done.

Giovanni’s index finger tapped once. Yes.

A profound, overwhelming sense of gratitude and protective fury washed over Lorenzo. In a world where loyalty was bought with blood and money, this penniless, pregnant girl had offered genuine, uncalculated compassion to a broken king.

"I handled Mrs. Gable," Lorenzo told his father, his voice dropping into a lethal register. "She won't ever set foot in this house again. And I have moved Nora to the guest suites. She is safe."

Giovanni’s eyes softened slightly, a silent, profound relief washing over his weathered features.

Lorenzo spent the next hour building a roaring fire in the hearth, warming the freezing room. He ordered his personal chef to prepare a massive, hot meal of roasted meats, fresh vegetables, and rich pasta, bringing the tray up himself and feeding his father.

"Things are going to change around here, Papa," Lorenzo promised as he wiped his father's chin. "I am going to clean house."

But the house was not the only thing that needed cleaning.

Later that evening, Lorenzo sat in his private study, a glass of expensive bourbon in his hand, reviewing the estate's financial ledgers. Mrs. Gable hadn't just been cruel; she had been embezzling massive amounts of money, inflating the staff payroll and pocketing the difference.

She was a thief and a tyrant.

And Lorenzo Moretti did not forgive thieves.
