CHAPTER 35: THE PORCH LIGHT

It was late August. The cicadas were humming their loud, rhythmic song in the trees.

Oliver was asleep upstairs, exhausted from a day of running through the sprinkler with Barnaby.

Michael and Emma sat on the front porch swing.

The chain creaked gently as they swayed back and forth. The yellow glow of the porch light illuminated the slate-blue trim of the door frame Michael had painted years ago.

Michael had his arm draped around Emma’s shoulders. She was leaning against his chest, listening to the steady, calm rhythm of his heartbeat.

A car drove past slowly, its headlights sweeping across the lawn.

Neither of them flinched. Neither of them cared who it was.

"Do you ever think about the day I left my jacket on the chair?" Michael asked softly into the night air.

Emma looked up at the stars peeking through the canopy of the oak trees.

Michael tightened his arm around her.

"It was the only good decision I ever made entirely on my own," he murmured.

Emma smiled. She reached up and rested her hand against his cheek.

"You've made a lot of good decisions since then," she whispered.

They sat in the quiet.

The house behind them was sturdy. It was filled with cheap dog toys, a bright red toaster, and a neon-yellow coat hung on a peg by the door.

It was a sanctuary.

The cycle wasn't just broken. It had been ground into dust and scattered to the wind. In its place, a massive, unshakeable oak tree had grown.

Michael kissed her forehead.

Emma closed her eyes.

The porch light stayed on, not to ward off the darkness, but simply to guide them home.
