CHAPTER 13: THE NOVEMBER BOX

November arrived.

The air turned cold, and the leaves stripped themselves from the oak trees in the front yard.

Holidays had always been a performance.

Diane used to dictate the menu. The seating arrangements. The exact shade of the napkins. Emma used to spend weeks bracing for the critique of her turkey, her dress, her son’s volume.

This year, the calendar felt empty.

Empty felt like oxygen.

Three days before Thanksgiving, a heavy cardboard box arrived on the porch.

No return address.

But the handwriting on the label was sharp, elegant, and unmistakable.

Emma stood on the porch looking at it.

Her heart did a familiar, traitorous flutter.

Michael pulled into the driveway. He parked, walked up the steps, and saw the box.

He didn’t try to hide it.

He didn’t say, “I’ll handle it,” and whisk it away like a secret.

He stopped beside Emma.

“From my mother,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Do you want to open it?”

Emma looked at the heavy tape. She thought about the poison that could be wrapped in expensive tissue paper. A toy for Oliver that made too much noise. A passive-aggressive sweater for her.

“No,” she said.

Michael nodded.

He picked up the box. He didn't take it inside.

He walked it straight to the recycling bin in the garage, dropped it in, and closed the lid.

A dull thud.

That was it.

On Thursday, they didn’t roast a turkey.

They ordered three large pizzas.

Oliver wore pajamas with rocket ships on them. Michael wore a faded college t-shirt. Emma drank wine from a stemless glass.

They sat on the floor around the coffee table.

Oliver dropped a slice of pepperoni on the rug.

No one yelled.

May you like

Emma wiped it up with a paper towel.

It was the best Thanksgiving they ever had.
