Chapter 15

CHAPTER 15: THE VISUAL TIMER
In January, the inevitable happened.
Michael had a crisis at the Chicago office.
He could not fix it over the phone. He needed to fly.
Two days. One night.
He sat at the kitchen island and told Emma first.
“I don't have to go,” he said immediately. “I can send David.”
Emma looked at her husband.
He was asking for permission, but more than that, he was asking for her trust.
“You need to go,” she said.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
That evening, they told Oliver.
Oliver stared at the small black suitcase near the door.
His lower lip trembled.
“Plane?” he asked.
“Plane,” Michael said. He knelt down so he was eye-level with his son. “But only one sleep.”
Michael pulled a piece of paper from his pocket.
He had drawn a simple timeline.
A picture of a plane. A picture of a moon. A picture of a sun. A picture of a house.
“I fly today. You sleep tonight. The sun comes up. I come home.”
Oliver took the paper.
He looked at the moon.
“One sleep,” Oliver verified.
“One sleep,” Michael promised.
Michael left.
The house felt different without him.
Not dangerous. Just missing a piece.
That night, Michael called on FaceTime. He showed Oliver his boring hotel room. He showed him the ice machine in the hallway.
The next afternoon, at 4:00 p.m., the front door unlocked.
Michael walked in.
Oliver ran from the living room with the piece of paper in his hand.
“Sun came up! Daddy home!”
Michael dropped his bag and caught his son.
“Daddy’s home.”

Trust wasn’t built by never leaving.
It was built by coming back exactly when you said you would.
