Chapter 25

CHAPTER 25: THE ROOT SYSTEM

Spring arrived, washing the last of the gray snow from the yard.

It was a Sunday morning in late April.

Emma was in the backyard. She was wearing gardening gloves, kneeling in the dirt, planting a row of hydrangeas along the back fence.

They weren't perfectly symmetrical. The spacing was slightly off. There was no professional landscaper directing the work to ensure it met country club standards.

It was just Emma, a trowel, and the smell of wet earth.

Michael was sitting on the back patio. He was reading a book, a cup of coffee steaming on the small table beside him.

Oliver was running across the grass in his bright yellow coat, chasing a butterfly. He tripped over a tree root and tumbled into the soft grass.

He didn't cry. He popped right back up, brushed the dirt off his knees, and kept running.

Emma sat back on her heels. She took off one glove and wiped her forehead.

She looked at the house.

She looked at her husband.

She looked at her son.

The trauma hadn't magically disappeared. It was still a chapter in their history. There would still be hard days, therapy appointments, and moments where the past tried to cast a shadow.

But the shadow was no longer the author of the story.

The roots they had planted over the last year had finally taken hold. They were deep. They were strong. They were woven together through apologies that meant something, changed behavior, and the quiet, daily choice to choose each other.

Michael looked up from his book. He caught her watching him.

He smiled.

He didn't need to ask if she was okay. He didn't need to check the perimeter.

Emma smiled back.

She turned back to the dirt. She dug a new hole, placed the roots into the ground, and covered them with fresh, dark soil.

The garden was messy.

May you like

The house was loud.

And the life they had built was an absolute masterpiece.
