Chapter 16

CHAPTER 16: THE PAPER CUP
An email arrived in February.
From Vanessa.
Can we get coffee? Just you and me. 20 minutes.
Emma showed the email to Michael.
“You don’t have to go,” he said.
“I know.”
Emma went.
They met at a loud, crowded café downtown. Neutral ground. No history attached to the tables.
Vanessa was already there.
She didn’t have a designer bag acting as a shield on the chair beside her. She wore no makeup. She looked tired.
But she looked real.
Emma sat down.
Vanessa handed her a paper cup of green tea.
“I didn’t know what you drank now,” Vanessa said softly. “So I guessed.”
“Tea is fine.”
They didn’t hug.
They didn’t pretend the last five years were a misunderstanding.
“Therapy is hard,” Vanessa said, looking at the plastic lid of her cup.
“Yes.”
“I realized... I spent my whole life trying to be useful to my mother so she wouldn't destroy me the way she destroyed everyone else.”
Vanessa looked up.
Her eyes were red.
“I used you as a shield, Emma. And I used Oliver.”
Emma held the warm paper cup.
“You did.”
Vanessa nodded. She accepted the truth without flinching.
“I am trying to be a person now,” Vanessa whispered. “Not an echo.”
Emma looked at her sister-in-law.
She saw a woman pulling herself out of the same wreckage they had all survived.
“Keep trying,” Emma said.
She stood up.
The meeting was exactly twenty minutes.
It wasn't a total reconciliation.

But it was a bridge.
Made of toothpicks, perhaps. But it held.
