Chapter 19

CHAPTER 19: THE BLUE PAINT
The front door frame had a patch of dry rot.
It had been there since they bought the house. A soft, crumbling spot near the bottom hinge.
For years, Michael had ignored it.
One Saturday in June, he went to the hardware store.
He bought fresh wood. Wood filler. Sandpaper. And a can of bright, slate-blue paint.
Emma came outside while he was chiseling out the rotten wood.
“What are you doing?”
“Fixing the frame.”
He pulled out a chunk of decaying timber. It fell to the porch in a pile of dust.
“You can’t un-rot wood,” Michael said, staring at the hole. “You can’t negotiate with it. You just have to cut it out completely and replace it with something solid.”
Emma understood he was not talking about the door.
She sat on the porch step.
Michael fitted the new piece of wood into the gap. He sanded it flush.
Then he opened the can of blue paint.
He handed a second brush to Emma.
“Help me?”
She took the brush.
They painted the trim together.
It wasn’t a subtle color. It was bold. It announced itself.
When they finished, the door looked entirely different.
May you like
It didn't look like the house they had survived in.
It looked like the house they lived in.
