Chapter 8 - The Ghost of Daniel Price

|

I stood paralyzed in the cold warehouse light, staring at my father.

My entire legacy—the company I built from nothing, the pride I had carried for nearly two decades—was built on a foundation of terror and blackmail orchestrated by my best friend, and covered up by my father.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "Why didn't you let me face the truth back then?"

"Because you would have dismantled the company!" Isaiah cried out, reaching a trembling hand toward me. "You were too honorable, Mason! You would have confessed to everything, surrendered your licenses, and spent your youth in financial ruin or prison for a crime your partner committed! I couldn't let Daniel destroy your life!"

"So you buried it in Box 417," Detective Ruiz observed, reading through Walter Mercer's handwritten note.

"I made Mercer write that statement," Isaiah said. "I put it in Mason's secure storage box so that if Daniel ever came back to blackmail us, we would have proof that Daniel was the sole extortionist."

"Where is Walter Mercer now?" Ruiz asked.

"He passed away five years ago," Vanessa supplied quietly from the background. "His estate was liquidated."

Ruiz turned the page of the confession. Her eyes narrowed as she read a final line at the bottom of Mercer's letter.

"Mr. Sloane," Ruiz said, looking directly at me. "Your father wasn't the only person Mercer wrote to. Look at this."

She pointed her gloved finger at a postscript at the bottom of the page:

If Daniel Price ever returns, tell Claire Dawson to check the Decatur files. She knows what Daniel took from her father.

I snapped my head toward Vanessa. "Claire’s father? Claire’s father was a high school history teacher! What does he have to do with Daniel Price?!"

Before anyone could answer, Vanessa’s cell phone rang loudly. She pulled it from her coat, looked at the caller ID, and completely dropped the phone onto the concrete floor.

"Who is it?" I demanded, stepping forward and picking up her phone.

Tell Mason that poison was just the down payment. The triplets are next if he doesn't bring Box 417 to Decatur Street tonight.
