Chapter 20 - The Silent Spectator

|
My heart hammered against my ribs as the dark truth finally revealed itself in all its horrific glory.
The poisoning of Claire, the extortion of Walter Mercer, the return of Daniel Price—it was never just about a simple land dispute. It was about controlling Sloane Infrastructure Group, a multi-billion-dollar corporate juggernaut that Eleanor Vance had spent twenty years secretly using as a front for global financial crimes.
And now, she had kidnapped Vanessa to silence her forever.
My phone chimed with a new text message from an unknown, encrypted number.
I opened it with trembling fingers.
It was a live-stream video link.
I tapped the screen. The video feed flickered to life, showing a dimly lit industrial basement. Vanessa was tied to a wooden chair in the center of the room, bruised and bloodied, a piece of heavy silver tape covering her mouth.
Standing beside her was Eleanor Vance, holding a sleek black suppressed pistol in her gloved hand.
Eleanor looked directly into the camera, a cold, terrifying, motherly smile gracing her lips.
"Hello, Julian... oh, forgive me, Mason," Eleanor spoke smoothly, her voice dripping with venomous elegance. "You always were such a clever boy. So good at building things. But you spent so much time looking at the foundation, you never noticed who owned the ground you were standing on."
"Where are you, Eleanor?!" I roared into the phone, though I knew she couldn't hear me directly through the stream.
"If you call the police, Mason, Vanessa dies instantly," Eleanor continued calmly, checking the action on her firearm. "And if you don't bring me the master access codes to Sloane Infrastructure's central clearing house by midnight... I will make sure your precious wife and three beautiful little triplets join her."
The video stream went black.
I stood in the ruined apartment, surrounded by the silence of the night, holding my breath as the ticking clock on the wall marked every passing second.
Outside the window, a flash of lightning illuminated the dark Atlanta skyline. Rain began to pour down against the glass.

I slipped my gun back into my holster, grabbed my phone, and looked down at the dark screen.
The game had just changed. The real war was only beginning.
