Chapter 14 - Broken Trust

|

A flashbang grenade burst in the center of the room with a blinding white light and a thunderous boom.

"SWAT! DON'T MOVE! DROP THE WEAPON!"

Armed tactical officers poured through the shattered windows and the hallway doors, lasers painting red dots across Daniel’s chest and arms.

Daniel panicked, firing two wild shots toward the ceiling as he scrambled backward. I dove across the floor, tackling Sarah Mercer to the ground just as a stray bullet splintered the doorframe behind us.

"GET DOWN!" I screamed, shielding Sarah with my body.

Daniel reached for the silver detonator on the chair, intending to blow up the structural support beams of the floor, but Detective Ruiz burst through the doorway, raising her service weapon and firing two precise shots.

BANG! BANG!

The bullets struck Daniel in the shoulder and thigh. He let out a agonizing shriek, dropping the detonator and falling hard onto the concrete floor, pool of blood quickly spreading beneath him.

SWAT officers swarmed him instantly, pinning his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Target secured!" an officer yelled. "Building clear!"

I stood up, shaking dust from my suit, and looked down at Daniel Price, who was writing in pain on the floor, groaning as officers applied a tourniquet to his leg.

Sarah Mercer was sobbing uncontrollably on her knees, her hands restrained by a female officer. She looked up at me through a veil of tears.

"I'm sorry..." Sarah wept. "I thought... I thought I was avenging my dad..."

I looked at her with a mix of pity and disgust. "The antidote, Sarah. Where is it?"

"In... in my coat pocket," she sobbed. "The blue vial. It reverses the neurological paralysis completely."

I grabbed the blue vial from her coat, turned around, and sprinted down the stairwell without waiting for the elevator.
