Chapter 15 - Lockdown at St. Catherine’s

|

I arrived back at St. Catherine's Hospital accompanied by a police escort, running through the ICU doors with the blue vial clutched tightly in my hand.

Dr. Bennett and his team immediately took the antidote, administering it directly into Claire’s IV line.

For thirty excruciating minutes, I stood by her bed, holding her hand, watching the cardiac monitors. Slowly, miraculously, the violent tremors in her body ceased. The pale, deathly hue on her skin vanished, replaced by a warm, natural flush.

Her eyelids fluttered open.

"Mason..." she whispered, her voice stronger than it had been all night.

I collapsed beside her bed, burying my face into her neck, sobbing uncontrollably. "You're okay, baby. It's over. It's finally over."

By sunrise, the rain had stopped, giving way to a brilliant golden light washing over the Atlanta skyline.

Claire was moved back to a private recovery suite. Sitting beside her bed were three rolling bassinets containing Noah, Elliot, and Grace. My father sat in the rocking chair in the corner, holding Grace gently against his chest, feeding her a small bottle of milk with a soft, peaceful smile on his face.

Vanessa stood by the window, looking out at the city. She turned to me, holding her resignation letter in her hands.

"I suppose you won't be needing this anymore," she said quietly, tearing the letter into small pieces and letting them fall into the wastebasket.

"You're not going anywhere, Vanessa," I said, putting an arm around her shoulder. "We have a business to restructure."

"What are you going to do about the Decatur district?" she asked.

I looked at Claire, who was holding Noah and Elliot in her arms, her eyes full of warmth and resilience.

"We aren't building a commercial transit hub," I declared proudly. "We are transferring the entire land title into the Arthur Dawson Educational Trust. We’re building a state-of-the-art children's hospital and research center. Named after Claire."

Claire looked up at me, tears glistening in her eyes. "Mason... that's incredible."

"It's what should have been done sixteen years ago," I said, leaning down to kiss her lips.
