Chapter 19 - Safe in His Arms

|

I grabbed my car keys, unholstered my concealed firearm from my desk safe, and ran down the stairs.

I checked on Claire and the triplets first. They were asleep peacefully in the master suite, guarded by four heavy private security contractors I had hired permanently for our estate.

"Keep the gates locked. Nobody enters or leaves," I instructed the head of security quietly.

I drove like a madman through the quiet night, heading straight for Vanessa’s luxury high-rise apartment in midtown Atlanta.

When I arrived at her floor, I found her apartment door unlocked, resting open by a fraction of an inch.

I drew my weapon, keeping my back against the wall, and pushed the door open with my foot.

"Vanessa?" I called out softly into the dark apartment.

The living room was completely ransacked. Papers were scattered across the floor, furniture overturned, and the heavy wall safe behind her desk stood wide open and empty.

In the center of the room lay Vanessa’s personal assistant, unconscious on the carpet with a dark bruise across his temple.

I rushed over, checking his pulse. He was alive, groaning softly as he opened his eyes.

"Mason...?" he rasped, clutching his bleeding head.

"Where is Vanessa?!" I demanded, pulling him up. "Who was here?!"

"They... they took her," the assistant gasped through the pain. "An hour ago... three armed men... led by Eleanor Vance..."

May you like

"Why?!"

"Vanessa found the offshore records..." the assistant wept. "She realized Eleanor was using Sloane Infrastructure to launder money for international cartels through the Decatur development! Vanessa was going to the FBI tomorrow morning... Eleanor found out!"
