Chapter 1 - The Triplets and the Toxin

The moment my three babies entered the world, I thought I was witnessing the happiest night of my life. I stood in the birthing suite at St. Catherine’s Medical Center, holding my breath as three tiny, fragile cries echoed against the sterile walls. For one perfect moment, as I looked at my wife Claire smiling weakly through her exhaustion, I believed nothing in the world could ever hurt us.
Then, the alarms began to scream.
Within seconds, the tranquil room erupted into chaos. Red lights flashed outside the glass doors. Nurses rushed past me, pushing emergency carts loaded with defibrillators and IV bags.
"Get him out of here!" a doctor yelled, shoving me toward the corridor.
"Claire!" I shouted, my voice cracking as I watched her face turn an ashen, ghostly gray. Her eyes rolled back, her body trembling violently against the white sheets.
Less than an hour later, I stood outside the Intensive Care Unit, trapped in a nightmare. I was Mason Sloane, founder and CEO of Sloane Infrastructure Group. My empire spanned bridges, transit systems, and skyscraper developments across the country. Magazines called me a visionary billionaire, but in that sterile hallway, my wealth meant absolutely nothing.
Across the hall, my executive vice president, Vanessa Vale, stood clutching her smartphone. She pressed her pale lips together, looking away whenever I caught her eye. She was the last person I expected to see at two in the morning in a private hospital wing.
Suddenly, the heavy ICU doors swung open. Dr. Adrian Bennett stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask. His eyes carried a heavy, terrifying weight.
"Mr. Sloane," he said quietly.
I stepped forward immediately, my hands clenched into tight fists. "Tell me she’s okay. Please."
The doctor hesitated, taking a long, measured breath. That single moment of silence terrified me more than any corporate crisis I had ever faced.
"Your wife is alive," Dr. Bennett said, selecting his words with extreme care. "Her condition has stabilized for now. But her collapse was not caused by complications from childbirth."
My stomach dropped into a dark abyss. "What are you saying?"
He looked directly into my eyes, his tone deadly serious. "Claire has significant traces of a synthetic neurotoxin in her bloodstream."
The hallway went dead quiet. The distant hum of the ventilation system seemed to evaporate.

"My wife was poisoned?" I whispered, struggling to process the word.
"Yes," Dr. Bennett answered firmly. "And it was a lethal dose."
