Chapter 6 - UNLEAKABLE LEDGERS|

By two in the morning, Dominic returned with my safe's contents sealed in an iron case.

I sat at a massive mahogany desk in Roman's private library, my sapphire dress slightly rumpled, my dark hair pinned back casually. Roman sat across from me, sipping scotch, watching my fingers fly across the keyboard of my laptop.

"I’m accessing the offshore escrow server now," I said, my eyes reflected in the screen glow. "It requires a double-encrypted token."

"Can you override Miles's secondary password?" Roman asked.

"Miles used his mother's maiden name for every password he ever created," I said with a faint, mocking laugh. "He thought he was a criminal mastermind."

I hit Enter.

A green confirmation prompt flashed across the monitor.

TRANSFER FROZEN. FUNDS RE-ROUTED TO VALE HOLDINGS ACCOUNT #8849.

"Done," I said, turning the laptop toward Roman. "Three million eight hundred thousand dollars. It will settle in your primary Boston vault account by six a.m."

Roman looked at the screen, then raised his eyes to mine. "You just moved four million dollars in under ten minutes."

"I told you I knew where the money was."

Roman leaned forward, placing his elbows on the desk. "You cleared your husband's debt. Which means legally, I owe you three point eight million dollars worth of mercy."

"I don't want your mercy, Mr. Vale," I said, leaning back in the plush leather chair. "I want my firm back. I want my life back."

"Call me Roman," he said softly. "And your firm is officially clean. But Miles owes more people than just me, Claire. Marco Moretti knows about Miles's failed Swiss deal. By morning, Moretti's men will be coming for Harlow Restoration."

My heart sank. "Moretti? The South End cartel?"

"Yes," Roman said, his gray eyes darkening. "And unlike me, Marco doesn't care about fifty-one percent voting shares. He will burn your gallery to the ground just to send a message."
