Chapter 13 - BLOOD AND CANTON|

Roman moved like a panther.
He didn't hesitate. He Vaulted over the heavy marble railing of the balcony, dropping fifteen feet to the hardwood floor below with terrifying grace.
He landed near me, grabbing my waist with one arm and pulling me behind the thick stone archway just as a spray of bullets shattered the plaster wall where I had been standing.
"I told you to stay away!" Roman growled in my ear, his chest heaving, the smell of gunpowder thick on his suit.
"If I stayed away, you'd be dead!" I shot back, looking up at his face. A thin line of blood ran down his cheek from a flying glass shard.
"You came back for me," Roman murmured, his gray eyes searching mine with a sudden, intense heat that had nothing to do with the gunfight.
"I don't let my partners die," I said breathlessly.
Roman let out a dark, breathless laugh. "Partners?"
Before I could answer, a shadow appeared at the end of the kitchen corridor.
It was Miles.
He was wearing a rain jacket, holding a shaking revolver in his hand, his eyes wild and bloodshot.
"Claire!" Miles screamed, his voice breaking. "Get away from him! He ruined everything!"
May you like
Roman stepped completely in front of me, shielding my body with his broad frame, raising his weapon directly at Miles's chest.
"Put the gun down, Miles," Roman said softly. "You're out of your depth."
