Chapter 14 - THE END OF MILES|

"I owned everything!" Miles shrieked, his finger trembling on the trigger. "She was my wife! The firm was my name! You took it all!"
"You gave it away, Miles," I spoke up from behind Roman's shoulder, stepping out just enough to look my ex-husband in the eye. "You traded me in a basement for three million dollars. You destroyed yourself."
"Shut up!" Miles sobbed. "Shut up!"
Miles raised his revolver to aim at my face.
BANG!
A single gunshot echoed through the high ceilings.
Miles froze. His revolver slipped from his fingers, clattering against the hardwood floor. He looked down at his chest in shock, where a single red hole was spreading across his white shirt.
Behind him stood Dominic, holding a smoking pistol.
Miles collapsed to his knees, his eyes rolling back as he fell face-down onto the broken marble floor—dead before his body even hit the ground.
Silence descended over the ruined mansion.
I looked at Miles's body. I expected to feel horror. I expected to cry.
Instead, I felt nothing. Just a cold, clean empty space where eight years of fear used to live.

Roman turned toward me, setting his gun on a side table. He reached out his large, warm hand and gently touched my face, his thumb wiping a speck of dust from my cheek.
"It's over, Claire," Roman whispered softly. "He can never touch you again."
