Chapter 3 - THE AUDIT|

Miles’s face drained of every last drop of color. "Claire, don't..."

"He didn't lose it in private card rooms," I told Roman, my voice steady and unwavering. "Miles isn't smart enough to hide money in shell companies, but he is greedy enough to try. Three weeks ago, four wire transfers left our operating account for an offshore bank in the Cayman Islands under the name 'Vance Holdings.'"

Roman turned his head slightly toward his lieutenant standing by the door. "Dominic. Look up Vance Holdings."

"Already on it, boss," the scar-faced lieutenant muttered, pulling out a encrypted tablet.

"That four million dollars is sitting in an escrow account waiting for an illegal art purchase in Geneva next Thursday," I continued. "I have the ledger keys in my safe at home. I can freeze the transfer and re-route the funds directly to your account by morning."

Roman stared at me for a long, heavy moment. The silence stretched until the sound of rain against the glass felt deafening.

"You're very sharp, Claire," Roman said, his dark voice carrying an undeniable trace of respect. "Your husband told me you were just a glorified receptionist who managed his schedule."

"My husband hasn't looked at a financial ledger in eight years," I said coldly. "He spent his time taking credit for my work and telling me I was too heavy for my dresses."

Roman’s eyes drifted over my sapphire dress, lingering for a fraction of a second before returning to my face.

"He’s an idiot," Roman said flatly.

He stepped back and looked down at Miles, who was weeping silently into the carpet.

"Dominic," Roman ordered. "Put Miles in the back room. He stays there until the wire clears."

"Wait!" Miles screamed as Dominic grabbed him by his collar and hauled him to his feet. "Claire! You can't leave me with these monsters! I'm your husband!"

"You were my husband," I corrected him softly. "Until you tried to sell me."
