Chapter 8 - Cinderella in the Crossfire

The concept was insane. Marrying the most feared mafia boss in New York to protect herself from her cartel ex-husband. It sounded like a movie script, not her real life.
“Alessandro, you can't be serious,” Sophia stammered, pulling her hands away. “Your men will think you’ve lost your mind. Marrying a maid? The other crime families will see it as a massive weakness.”
“I don't give a damn about what the other families see,” Alessandro growled, standing up and pacing the room. “I care about keeping you and Emma alive. Mateo wants to use you to break me. If you are my wife, he cannot touch you without starting a war he cannot win.”
He stopped, looking at her with a raw, desperate vulnerability that made her heart ache.
“And I want it, Sophia,” he confessed softly. “I have lived in complete darkness for a decade. Then you and your daughter walked into my living room, painted a butterfly on my face, and woke me up. I am not letting you go.”
Sophia looked at the man who had just returned from a bloodbath, begging to give her his empire. She thought of Mateo’s cruel fists, and then she thought of Alessandro’s gentle laugh when Emma handed him a crayon.
“Okay,” Sophia whispered, tears spilling over her lashes. “Yes.”
The next seventy-two hours were a whirlwind of terrifying glamour.
Alessandro did not do things by halves. He didn't want a quiet courthouse ceremony; he wanted a massive, highly publicized syndicate wedding to send an undeniable message of strength to the Vipers.
A team of elite stylists was brought into the penthouse. Sophia was transformed. Her practical maid uniforms were burned, replaced by designer silks, tailored blazers, and a massive, flawless diamond ring that felt heavy on her finger.
When she finally emerged from the master suite wearing a breathtaking, form-fitting white lace gown, the household staff in the hallway gasped.
They didn't look at her with contempt. They looked at her with absolute, terrifying reverence. She wasn't Sophia the maid anymore. She was Donna Moretti.
Alessandro was waiting at the bottom of the grand marble staircase, wearing a bespoke black tuxedo. When he looked up and saw her, the breath physically left his lungs.
He walked up the stairs, ignoring the dozens of guards watching them, and took her hand.
“You look like a queen,” he murmured, kissing her knuckles.
“I feel like I’m wearing a target,” she admitted, her voice trembling slightly.

“Then I will be your shield,” Alessandro promised, pulling her flush against his chest.
Downstairs, the sprawling ballroom was filled with three hundred of the most dangerous men and women in the country. The trap was set.
