Chapter 12 - The Underground Vault

|
The panic room was a subterranean fortress, stocked with monitors, weapons, and medical supplies. Sophia set a crying Emma on a cot, pulling a thick wool blanket around her shivering shoulders.
“It’s okay, baby, we’re safe,” Sophia whispered, kissing the little girl’s forehead until her sobs quieted into exhausted hiccups.
Sophia turned her attention to the bank of security monitors on the wall. She powered them on, her heart hammering against her ribs.
The screens flickered to life, displaying a chaotic war zone. The beautiful ballroom was completely destroyed. But it wasn't the Vipers who were winning.
Alessandro’s elite loyalists had rallied. The heavily armed security teams were systematically sweeping the mansion, pinning the remaining Viper assassins down in brutal, close-quarters combat.
Sophia switched the camera feeds, frantically searching for Alessandro.
She found him on the feed for the grand foyer.
He was leaning heavily against a marble column, reloading his pistol. His white tuxedo shirt was soaked in blood, a dark, spreading stain blooming across his left shoulder. He had taken a bullet.
“No, no, no,” Sophia gasped, pressing her hand against the screen.
Suddenly, a massive figure stepped into the frame. It was Mateo.
Her ex-husband looked exactly as cruel as she remembered, holding an assault rifle, grinning a sickening, arrogant smile as he cornered the wounded mafia king.
Sophia couldn't hear the audio, but she could see Mateo talking, taunting Alessandro. Mateo raised his rifle, aiming directly at Alessandro’s chest.
Sophia didn't think. She scanned the panic room control panel. There was an internal PA system, designed for the boss to communicate with the estate during a lockdown.
She grabbed the microphone, her fingers flying over the master volume controls, cranking them to the absolute maximum.
“MATEO!” Sophia screamed into the microphone.
The sound exploded through every speaker in the mansion at a deafening, eardrum-shattering volume.
On the screen, Mateo violently flinched, instinctively covering his ears and dropping his rifle slightly in shock at the sudden, booming sound of his ex-wife’s voice.
It was a distraction that lasted exactly one second.
But one second is an eternity to a predator.

Alessandro lunged forward through the pain, firing two precise, lethal shots.
Mateo collapsed backward onto the ruined marble floor, his reign as the Viper king ended permanently.
