Chapter 4 - The Silent Hunt

Alessandro did not explode. He did not flip the heavy mahogany dining table or shout for his armed guards.
Instead, a terrifying, absolute calm washed over him. He folded Emma’s crayon drawing neatly into a square and slipped it into the inner pocket of his suit jacket.
“You thought your ex-husband tracked you here?” Alessandro asked, his voice deceptively smooth.
“Mateo is a lieutenant for the Vipers in Queens,” Sophia choked out, pulling Emma protectively against her legs. “He was violent. I took Emma and ran two years ago. When I saw the snake tattoo today... I panicked.”
Alessandro stepped closer, lifting a hand to gently wipe a tear from Sophia’s cheek. The intimacy of the gesture shocked her, freezing her in place.
“The Vipers did not come to my house for you, Sophia,” Alessandro murmured, his dark eyes burning with a possessive, dangerous fire. “They came for my empire. And Vincent handed them the keys.”
“What are you going to do?” she whispered.
“I am going to do what I do best,” he replied coldly. “I am going to hunt.”
He turned to the doorway. “Do not let Vincent know that you or Emma saw anything. Act completely normal. You are moving into my private penthouse suite on the top floor tonight. I want you behind bulletproof glass until this is finished.”
The next morning, the estate operated under a chilling illusion of normalcy.
Vincent Romano poured Alessandro’s morning espresso in the study, playing the role of the loyal consigliere flawlessly.
“The shipment from Miami arrives at the southern docks at midnight, Boss,” Vincent reported, setting the porcelain cup on the desk. “I’ve arranged a standard security detail.”
“Excellent,” Alessandro said, taking a sip, his eyes fixed dead on Vincent’s face. “I think I will personally oversee the unloading tonight. It has been a while since I visited the docks.”
Vincent’s hands twitched. It was a microscopic movement, but to a predator like Alessandro, it was a siren.
“Sir, is that wise?” Vincent asked quickly. “The Vipers have been aggressive lately. It’s too dangerous for you to be out in the open.”
“I am never in danger in my own city, Vincent,” Alessandro smiled, a cold, empty expression. “Besides, I trust you have secured the perimeter perfectly.”
“Of course, sir.”
“Good. Ride with me tonight, Vincent. We will watch the shipment come in together.”

As Vincent left the room, clearly sweating, Alessandro pulled out a secure, encrypted phone. He dialed his most ruthless enforcer.
“Gather the tactical team,” Alessandro commanded quietly. “The southern docks are a trap. We are going to bleed the Vipers dry tonight.”
