Chapter 15 - The Dawn of an Empire

|

The cleanup took days, but the message it sent to the criminal underworld was absolute.

Alessandro Moretti was not a man weakened by love. He was a man utterly fortified by it. The execution of Mateo and Vincent, combined with the brutal suppression of the Vipers, cemented Alessandro as an untouchable king.

A month later, the estate had been completely restored, the bullet holes patched, the shattered glass replaced.

But the atmosphere inside the mansion had permanently changed. The cold, terrifying silence was gone.

Sophia walked through the sunlit grand foyer, carrying a cup of coffee. She wore a simple, elegant silk robe, her diamond wedding band catching the morning light. She was no longer afraid of the shadows in the house; she commanded them.

She walked into the main living room.

Alessandro was sitting on the black leather sofa, dressed in a sharp suit, preparing to leave for a meeting. But he wasn't alone.

Emma was sitting on his lap, carefully braiding a bright pink ribbon into his dark, perfectly styled hair.

“It has to be tight, Papa,” Emma commanded seriously, her little fingers working diligently.

“Of course, principessa,” Alessandro replied with complete, devoted sincerity, not caring in the slightest that he looked ridiculous. “Make it as tight as you need.”

Sophia leaned against the archway, her heart swelling with an overwhelming, profound love. This ruthless mafia boss, a man who had murdered his enemies without a second thought, was completely, helplessly wrapped around the little finger of a three-year-old girl.

Alessandro looked up, catching Sophia’s eye. A warm, breathtaking smile broke across his face, entirely erasing the tired, sad shadows that had once haunted his features.

“Good morning, my love,” Alessandro said softly.

“Good morning,” Sophia smiled, walking over and kissing him gently. “Are you ready to conquer the city today, or do you need more pink ribbons?”

“I think the ribbons give me a tactical advantage,” Alessandro grinned, kissing Emma’s cheek before carefully standing up.

He wrapped his arm around Sophia’s waist, pulling her close.

“We have peace, Sophia,” Alessandro murmured against her hair. “The enemies are buried. The empire is secure. You and Emma will never have to look over your shoulders again.”

Sophia rested her head against his chest, listening to his strong, steady heartbeat. She believed him. The monsters were dead.

But later that night, after Alessandro and Sophia had fallen asleep in the master suite, a cold wind blew through the estate.

In the nursery, Emma slept soundly in her bed.

The heavy, bulletproof window, which should have been magnetically sealed from the inside, was cracked open exactly two inches.

Resting perfectly in the center of the windowsill was a single, pristine black feather. Pinned beneath the feather was a small, elegant note written in silver ink.
