Chapter 2 - The Unseen Observer

The East Wing was a gilded cage of silk curtains, floor-to-ceiling windows, and terrifying silence.
For three weeks, Sophia lived in a state of constant anxiety. Her promotion from a low-level maid to Alessandro’s personal attendant came with a massive pay raise, but it also placed her directly in the crosshairs of the estate’s elite inner circle.
Vincent Romano hated her.
She could feel the estate manager’s cold, calculating eyes tracking her every movement. He scrutinized her cleaning, questioned her hours, and glared at Emma whenever the toddler ran down the marble hallways.
But Emma remained completely oblivious to the danger of her surroundings. To a three-year-old, the sprawling mansion was simply the world’s greatest playground.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, Sophia was organizing Alessandro’s private study while he was out attending a syndicate sit-down. Emma was playing hide-and-seek by herself, giggling as she squeezed into the narrow gap beneath Vincent Romano’s heavy oak desk in the adjacent administrative office.
Sophia didn’t notice she was gone until she heard the heavy thud of the office doors opening.
She froze in the study, peering through the cracked adjoining door.
Vincent walked into his office, accompanied by a man Sophia had never seen before. The stranger wore a cheap leather jacket, and a jagged, dark green snake tattoo coiled up the side of his neck.
“You shouldn’t be here, Silas,” Vincent hissed, locking the door behind them.
“The boss is getting impatient, old man,” the tattooed man replied, his voice a nasty, grating sneer. “We need the security bypass codes for the loading docks. Tonight.”
Emma, hidden perfectly beneath the desk, clutched her stuffed bear tightly over her mouth. She knew she wasn't supposed to be in Mr. Vincent’s room.
Vincent pulled a small, silver flash drive from his pocket.
“This contains the electronic keys to the southern ports,” Vincent said, his voice trembling slightly. “But tell your boss that this is the last time. If Alessandro finds out I’m selling his shipping routes to the Vipers, he’ll skin me alive.”
“You’re already in too deep, Vincent,” Silas laughed, snatching the drive. “The Vipers own you. When we finally take Moretti out, you’ll get your seat at the table. Just keep feeding us his schedule.”
Sophia pressed her hand over her mouth, her blood running completely cold.
The Vipers.
It was the rival gang that had terrorized Queens. The gang her abusive ex-boyfriend, Mateo, belonged to. The very reason she had changed her last name and hidden in the servitude of the Moretti estate.
“Get out before the guards see you,” Vincent ordered.

Silas slipped out the side door.
Beneath the desk, Emma’s wide brown eyes tracked the silver flash drive, committing the exchange to her vivid, toddler memory. She didn't understand the words, but she understood that the silver-haired man was doing something bad.
