Chapter 5 - The Breaking Point

The morning of the incident began with an oppressive, suffocating heat that seemed to penetrate the very walls of the mansion. Daniel had returned from his trip exhausted, his tie loosened, dark circles bruising the skin beneath his eyes. He had a massive deadline approaching, and he immediately locked himself in his study, leaving strict instructions that he was not to be disturbed under any circumstances.
Rebeca was pacing the kitchen, her wine-colored robe tied tightly around her waist. She was furious. Her elaborate plan to alter the digital files had taken all night, and she was running on a dangerous cocktail of caffeine and adrenaline. She needed a catalyst. She needed an explosive moment to unveil her forged masterpiece and finally break Daniel's bond with the children.
Sofía and Mateo were sitting at the large marble island in the kitchen, eating their cereal in absolute silence. They knew better than to make noise when Rebeca was in one of her moods. Sofía reached for the carton of orange juice, her small, uncoordinated hands struggling with the weight of the full container.
"Let me help you, Sofi," Mateo whispered, reaching across the counter.
But he was a second too late. The carton slipped from Sofía's grasp, hitting the marble counter with a heavy thud. The plastic cap popped off, and a tidal wave of sticky, bright orange liquid cascaded across the island. It spilled over the edge, splashing violently onto a stack of expensive, legal documents Rebeca had left sitting on a stool—the prenup and property deeds she was reviewing.
Rebeca stopped pacing. The kitchen fell into a deadly, terrifying silence. She stared at the ruined documents, the orange juice soaking into the thick paper, turning her carefully laid legal plans into a sticky, useless mess.
Her hands began to tremble. Her breathing became shallow and rapid. The mask of the sophisticated, composed fiancée completely shattered, revealing the unhinged, greedy monster lurking beneath.

"Look what you did," Rebeca whispered, her voice vibrating with a horrifying, uncontained rage. She slowly lifted her head, her eyes locking onto Sofía with absolute, murderous intent. "Look at what you did, you stupid, worthless little parasite!"
Sofía burst into tears, shrinking back against her chair. Mateo immediately jumped down from his stool, his heart slamming against his ribs. The breaking point had finally arrived, and there was nowhere to hide.
