Chapter 2 - The Silent Observer

Mateo sat at the top of the grand mahogany staircase, his knees pulled tightly to his chest. Through the wooden balustrades, he had a perfect vantage point of the grand foyer below. He was supposed to be in bed, but sleep had become a rare commodity ever since Rebeca moved in. His mind was a hyper-vigilant radar, constantly scanning the environment for threats. He felt a profound, heavy responsibility to protect Sofía. He was the older brother; he was the only one who remembered exactly how their mother used to make them feel safe.

Down in the foyer, Rebeca was pacing on the marble floor, a glass of dark red wine in her hand. She was wearing her signature wine-colored silk robe, the fabric trailing behind her like a pool of blood. She was speaking on her cell phone, her voice lowered to a harsh, venomous whisper. Mateo strained his ears, catching fragments of the conversation.

"The trust fund is locked," Rebeca hissed into the receiver, taking an angry sip of her wine. "Isabella's father made sure the bulk of the estate goes directly to the children when they turn eighteen. Daniel only controls the liquid assets until then. It’s infuriating."

Mateo held his breath, his small hands gripping the wooden spindles of the staircase. He didn't understand all the financial terminology, but he understood the raw, unfiltered hatred in her tone.

"I can't just wait a decade," Rebeca continued, her pacing growing more erratic. "I need the house in my name before the wedding. But Daniel is completely obsessed with those brats. Especially the little girl. She looks exactly like her dead mother, and it makes him weak. I have to find a way to sever that bond. I have to make him see them as a burden, not a blessing."

She paused, listening to the voice on the other end of the line, before a slow, chilling smile spread across her face.

"Don't worry," she whispered, her eyes flashing with malice. "I have a plan. Men are fragile creatures when it comes to their pride. All it takes is one perfectly placed seed of doubt, and the entire garden rots."

Mateo slowly backed away from the stairs, his heart hammering against his ribs. He didn't know what her plan was, but he knew with absolute certainty that their lives were in terrible danger.
