Chapter 16 - The Lingering Ghost

The days following Rebeca’s violent expulsion were a blur of police reports, changing locks, and meetings with security firms. Daniel filed formal charges for attempted assault and cyber forgery. He ensured that Rebeca was slapped with a massive restraining order, legally barring her from coming within a mile of the estate or the children.

Yet, despite the physical safety restored to the mansion, a psychological ghost still haunted the corridors.

Daniel could not entirely erase the image of the forged text messages from his mind. He knew, logically and analytically, that the messages were fake. He knew Isabella had been in a coma on the dates listed. He knew Rebeca was a pathological liar who had orchestrated the entire scenario to steal his estate.

But grief and trauma leave the mind incredibly vulnerable. Late at night, sitting alone in his study with a glass of whiskey, a tiny, irrational voice would whisper in the dark. What if she changed the dates by accident? What if the core of the message was true? What if Sofía really isn't yours?

He hated himself for even entertaining the thought. Every time he looked at Sofía’s bright smile, he felt a crushing wave of guilt for harboring even a fraction of a doubt. He was an architect; he needed absolute structural certainty. He could not build a future for his family on a foundation that had a single, invisible crack of doubt.

On a quiet Tuesday morning, after dropping the kids off at school, Daniel drove to a private medical clinic downtown. He sat in a sterile, white room and allowed a nurse to swab the inside of his cheek. He handed over a sealed envelope containing a few strands of hair he had gently pulled from Sofía’s hairbrush that morning.

He didn't tell Mateo. He didn't tell anyone. He simply paid the exorbitant fee for expedited, highly confidential DNA testing. It was the only way to kill the ghost of Rebeca's lie permanently. He needed the undeniable, scientific truth, written in black and white, to finally let his heart rest.
