Chapter 9 - The Panicked Snake

The reaction was instantaneous.
Claire dropped her linen napkin onto her plate, her delicate facade shattering into sharp, angry pieces.
"Sarah Jenkins?" Claire gasped, her voice trembling with suppressed rage. "Ethan, that woman was incompetent! I fired her eight months ago because she was stealing from the nursery!"
"She didn't steal anything, Claire," Ethan said, taking a slow sip of his water. "And I spoke with her today. She gave me a very detailed account of why she left."
Claire’s eyes darted frantically toward the children, then back to Ethan.
"Maddie, Noah, go to the playroom," Claire ordered harshly.
"No," Ethan commanded softly. "Maddie, stay right here with Daddy."
Maddie immediately slid off her chair and ran around the long table, throwing her tiny arms around Ethan's leg and hiding behind his chair.
Claire stood up, her blue dress sweeping against the rug.
"Ethan, I demand to know what is going on!" she hissed, stepping closer to his side of the table. "You come home from work, you cancel your business trips, you question my parenting, and now you rehire a fired servant behind my back?!"
"Sit down, Claire," Ethan said without raising his voice.
"I will not sit down in my own home!" she yelled.
"It's not your home," Ethan said calmly. "It's my home. Built with Emma's memory, funded by my company, and inhabited by my children. You are simply a guest who has overstayed her welcome."
Claire’s breath hitched. She took a step back, her mind working at frantic speed.
"You're having a breakdown," Claire whispered, forcing a look of theatrical pity onto her face. "You're stressed about the company, Ethan. You're imagining things because you still feel guilty about Emma—"
"Do not speak my wife's name," Ethan said, standing up.
Standing at six-foot-two, Ethan towered over her. The raw, terrifying authority that had made him one of the most feared executives in Chicago radiated from him like a furnace.
"I know about the Cayman account, Claire," Ethan whispered, bending down so only she could hear. "I know about the five-million-dollar insurance policy on Maddie. And I know what you did in the bathroom yesterday."
Claire looked at him as if he had just struck her across the face.

She didn't argue. She didn't deny it.
She simply turned on her heel and sprinted up the grand staircase toward the master bedroom.
