Chapter 5 - The Vanished Nanny

|

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the house was filled with the subtle humming of technicians disguised in grey HVAC uniforms.

Claire had taken Noah to a mommy-and-me music class in town, clearly irritated that Ethan was working from home instead of flying to New York.

While the technicians installed micro-cameras concealed inside smoke detectors and air vents, Ethan sat at his kitchen island with his personal tablet.

He wasn't looking at financial reports. He was looking at payroll records from eight months ago.

Before Claire had convinced Ethan to streamline the household staff, they had employed a full-time live-in nanny named Sarah Jenkins. Sarah had been hired by Emma before her death and had loved Maddie and Noah like her own children.

Eight months ago, Sarah had resigned suddenly, citing a family emergency in Ohio.

Ethan tapped Sarah's phone number into his encrypted line.

It rang four times before a cautious, hesitant voice answered.

"Hello?"

"Sarah? It's Ethan Caldwell."

Silence stretched over the line. Ethan could hear the sound of heavy breathing on the other end.

"Mr. Caldwell," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a tense whisper. "Why are you calling me?"

"I need to ask you about the time you spent at the house before you left," Ethan said, standing up and walking toward the glass doors leading to the patio. "Did you ever see Claire interact with Maddie when I wasn't there?"

Sarah let out a sharp, ragged gasp.

"Mr. Caldwell... I signed a non-disclosure agreement," Sarah whimpered. "Mrs. Caldwell told me if I ever spoke to you or anyone else, she would file charges against me for theft. She said she'd ruin my references so I could never work with children again."

Ethan’s grip tightened on his phone so hard the plastic creaked.

"She threatened you?"

"She fired me because I caught her locking Maddie in the dark pantry for two hours because Maddie dropped a milk glass!" Sarah cried out, the dam finally bursting. "I tried to call you that day, Mr. Caldwell, but your assistant said you were in meetings in London! Claire told me if I didn't pack my bags and sign the paper, she'd tell the police I stole her diamond bracelet!"

Ethan felt the world tilt on its axis.

"Sarah," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and grief. "Where are you right now?"

"I'm in Chicago," she sobbed. "Mr. Caldwell, please... Maddie is just a little girl. She doesn't scream because Claire told her if she made a sound, you would send her away to an orphanage!"

Ethan closed his eyes as a single, burning tear slipped down his cheek.

"She will never touch my daughter again," Ethan swore softly. "I promise you."
