Chapter 10 - The Midnight Trap

|

At 11:00 PM, a storm rolled over Lake Forest, cracking thunder across the sky and driving heavy rain against the high arched windows of the mansion.

Ethan sat in the playroom on the second floor, holding sleeping Noah in his lap while Maddie slept soundly on the small velvet sofa beside him, wrapped in three heavy blankets.

He refused to let them sleep in their bedrooms tonight. He was keeping them in his sight until the police arrived in the morning.

Down the hallway, the sound of drawers opening and slamming echoed from the master suite.

Claire was packing.

Frank Miller’s team was watching the exterior of the house. Every exit was monitored. Her passport had been flagged, her bank accounts frozen by a emergency court order secured by Eleanor Vance at 9:00 PM.

Claire was trapped, and she knew it.

Suddenly, the power cut out.

The mansion plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

The gentle hum of the HVAC system died. The standby generator, which usually kicked in within three seconds, remained dead—the main breaker had been manually tripped from the basement.

In the dark playroom, Ethan’s instincts screamed.

He set Noah gently on the sofa beside Maddie and pulled his cell phone from his pocket, turning on the flashlight beam.

Clack.

The sound of footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor outside the playroom door.

Ethan stood up quietly, positioning his body directly between the doorway and his sleeping children.

"Claire," Ethan said into the dark. "It's over. The police have the house surrounded. If you step out now, this stays in the hands of the lawyers."

A sharp, hysterical laugh echoed from the hallway.

"The lawyers?" Claire's voice rasped from the shadows. "Do you think I'm going to spend thirty years in a state prison because your stupid little brat couldn't keep her mouth shut?!"

The beam of Ethan's flashlight caught her standing in the doorway.

She wasn't holding a handbag.

She was holding a heavy brass fire-poker from the living room hearth, her eyes wide, bloodshot, and completely insane.
