Chapter 12 - Broken Chains

|

"Hands where we can see them!" the lead officer commanded, his flashlight pinned directly on Claire.

Claire lay among the broken porcelain, sobbing, her former elegance utterly destroyed. She raised her bloody hands slowly into the air.

"He attacked me!" Claire wailed, pointing a trembling, bloody finger toward Ethan. "He's crazy! He lost his mind because of his ex-wife! Look what he did to me!"

The lead officer looked at Ethan, who was standing quietly in the doorway of the playroom, his face scratched, his dress shirt torn, his hands steady.

Frank Miller stepped forward, holding an iPad displaying the live video feed recorded three hours earlier.

"Officer," Frank said quietly, handing the device to the sergeant. "You'll want to review this footage. It includes multiple counts of child endangerment, grand larceny, and premeditated assault recorded on off-grid security systems."

The sergeant watched the screen for twenty seconds. His face hardened.

He looked down at Claire with pure contempt.

"Claire Caldwell," the officer said, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for attempted assault, felony child endangerment, and financial fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As the steel cuffs clicked around her wrists, Claire began to scream—a loud, piercing, unhinged shriek that echoed off the high ceilings of the mansion.

"Ethan! Tell them to stop!" she screamed as two officers dragged her down the marble stairs. "Ethan! You can't do this to me! I'm your wife!"

Ethan didn't say a word. He didn't even watch her leave.

He turned around, stepped back into the playroom, and knelt beside the sofa.

Maddie was shivering under her blanket, holding Noah close to her chest.

Ethan pulled both of his children into his arms, wrapping them in a tight, unyielding embrace.

"It's over, baby," Ethan whispered, tears finally streaming unchecked down his face. "She's gone. She's never coming back."

Maddie looked up at him, her gray eyes clear and wide in the flashlight beam.

"Daddy?" she whispered softly.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Is it safe to cry now?"

Ethan buried his face in her hair and wept. "Yes, Maddie. It's safe."
