Chapter 19 - The New Foundation

By the following autumn, Ethan's life had transformed completely.
He had officially launched the Emma & Madison Child Protection Network—a private, non-profit organization that funded security technology, legal defense teams, and psychological counseling for vulnerable children across the country.
At the inauguration gala held at the Art Institute of Chicago, Ethan stood before a crowd of five hundred prominent community leaders, philanthropists, and media representatives.
He wore a dark tuxedo, but his posture was relaxed, his face open and warm.
"For a long time, I believed that success was measured by the height of towers and the value of stock portfolios," Ethan said into the podium microphone, his voice echoing through the grand hall. "I was wrong."
The crowd listened in complete, respectful silence.
"Real success," Ethan continued, looking out at the front table where Sarah sat with a four-year-old Noah and a glowing five-year-old Maddie, "is protecting the softest voices in your home. It is listening when they whisper, and standing as an impenetrable wall when the world tries to hurt them."
The room erupted into a standing ovation.
Later that night, as the gala wound down, Ethan walked through the museum gallery with Maddie holding his hand. She was wearing a pretty velvet dress, looking at the large impressionist paintings on the marble walls with wide, curious eyes.
"Ethan," Eleanor Vance called out, approaching them with a warm smile. "An extraordinary evening. You've raised over twelve million dollars for the network tonight."
"It's just the beginning, Eleanor," Ethan smiled.
"Speaking of beginnings," Eleanor said, her voice dropping into a lower, more business-like tone. "Victor Dalton’s legal team officially filed their corporate lawsuit against Caldwell Horizon this afternoon in federal court."

Ethan didn't flinch. He looked down at Maddie, who was giggling at a painting of a silly hat.
"Let them file whatever they want, Eleanor," Ethan said quietly. "They can bring every lawyer in New York. They will never break us."
