Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point

|

The scream never came.

That was what Ethan Caldwell remembered most. Not the thick steam swallowing the bathroom mirror. Not the scalding water pouring from the polished brass faucet. Not even the bright red marks spreading across his four-year-old daughter's arms.

It was the fact that Madison Caldwell wasn't screaming.

She stood barefoot beside the oversized marble tub, gripping the porcelain edge with both hands, trembling so hard her tiny knees knocked together.

"Please, Claire," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the water. "The water's too hot."

Claire Caldwell stood behind her in a crisp cream cashmere sweater, one manicured hand resting heavily on Maddie's frail shoulder.

"Good girls don't complain," Claire said softly, her voice smooth and maternal. "You want Daddy to think you're a good girl, don't you?"

Ethan stopped dead in the doorway.

Claire didn't see him. Not at first.

"Claire."

His voice changed the temperature of the room instantly.

She spun around, her golden hair swaying. For perhaps half a second, Ethan saw something on his wife's face he had never seen in their eighteen months of marriage.

Not surprise. Not guilt.

Pure, unadulterated anger.

Then it disappeared. Her expression softened with astonishing, terrifying speed.

"Ethan!" she gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "You're home early! You scared me."

Ethan looked past her down at his daughter. Maddie's wide gray eyes—the exact shade of her late mother's—found his. Then, almost reflexively, the little girl looked down at the bathmat.

That frightened him more than anything.

"What happened?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping an octave.

Claire gave a breathless, melodramatic little laugh.

"She turned the hot water tap on while I was grabbing her favorite pajamas," Claire said, shaking her head in gentle exasperation. "I was just trying to show her how to be careful—"

"No."

One word. Quiet. Flat.

Ethan crossed the heated tile floor, shut off the faucet with a sharp twist, wrapped Maddie in a oversized bath towel, and lifted her into his arms.

She weighed almost nothing. Too little.

He realized, with a sickening jolt, that he couldn't remember the last time he had carried her long enough to notice.

Maddie pressed her small face directly against his dress shirt.

"I'm sorry, Daddy," she whimpered.

Ethan froze, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"For what, sweetheart?"

"I'll be good."

Ethan’s eyes lifted slowly toward Claire.

Claire folded her arms, her golden bracelet clicking against her wrist. "You know how emotional she gets when she's tired, Ethan."

Ethan didn't answer. He turned and walked out.
