Chapter 2: The Zero Percent Illusion

Fernando took two long, aggressive strides across the room, closing the distance between them. With a sudden, forceful jerk of his arm, he shoved the brown Kraft envelope directly into her chest. The impact caused her to take a half-step back, her hand moving automatically to shield the baby.

“The baby is a zero percent match!” Fernando barked, his voice cracking with an unhinged, volatile rage. “Look at it! It’s right there in black and white. You’re out of my life, you greedy, manipulative leech!”

He spun around, running a hand through his hair, a cruel, mocking laugh escaping his lips. He believed he had just delivered the fatal blow to a three-year marriage built on what he considered a lie.

The wife stood completely still. Heavy tears rolled slowly down her damp cheeks, tracing the contours of her face, but her breathing remained controlled. She didn't scream. She didn't beg.

Slowly, using one hand while supporting the crying infant with the other, she unsealed the envelope. The crisp sound of the white legal document sliding out of the heavy paper seemed to echo in the vast office. She looked down at the laboratory results, her eyes moving slowly across the columns of data.
