Chapter 1: The Ultraviolet Vault

The air inside the executive suite of Santillán Holdings felt heavy, sterilized, and thin. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the city skyline cut a jagged edge against a grey afternoon. Inside, the sharp cinematic lighting cast long, unforgiving shadows across the massive mahogany desk and the rows of built-in wooden bookshelves.

Fernando Santillán paced the Persian rug like a predator contained in too small a cage. His dark hair was slightly mussed, his stubble tracing a tense, locked jawline. He wore his navy tailored Brooks Brothers suit with an arrogance that usually commanded boardrooms, but today, his volatile energy was vibrating at a dangerous frequency.

In the center of the room stood his wife. She was completely motionless in her elegant ivory tailored sheath dress, the subtle gold jewelry at her throat catching the cold light. Her face was tear-streaked, but her posture remained straight, unyielding. In her arms, she held their infant, wrapped tightly in a soft, premium organic cotton white romper. The baby’s soft, rhythmic whimpering was the only sound breaking the silence.

Fernando stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes fixed on a brown Kraft paper envelope clutched in his hand.

He took a slow, heavy breath, his chest rising beneath the crisp white dress shirt. When he spoke, his voice was a venomous, low whisper.

"You thought you were clever."

The wife didn't blink. She merely tightened her grip on the infant, her eyes tracking his slow, deliberate movements.
