Chapter 20 - The Open Horizon

|

The clock on the wall struck 7:00 PM—the exact start of Marin’s shift.

Downstairs in the driveway, the black armored sedan stood idling, its headlights cutting through the twilight mist.

Marco stood by the open rear door, waiting. Up in the garden, Adelaide was laughing gently with Teresa as they walked among the blooming white roses.

Inside the quiet master suite, Elias stood alone by the window, looking out at the long gravel driveway.

The heavy oak door behind him clicked open.

Elias turned slowly.

The room was quiet. The thick contract lay on the table, signed in dark blue ink—but beside it, the small velvet box was gone.

On the desk sat her worn leather notebook, open to the final page, with a single handwritten line written underneath her morning entries:

Shift completed. New contract accepted. - M.H.

Elias’s chest swelled with an overwhelming wave of relief and triumph. A slow, breathtaking smile broke across his face.

He walked out onto the high marble balcony, looking down at the front steps of the estate.

Standing beside the open door of the black sedan was Marin. She had discarded her old duffel bag. She stood tall in the cool evening wind, wearing a sleek dark coat, her hand resting comfortably against her side where her holstered weapon sat hidden.

She caught the silver ring on her hand in the moonlight, turning it slightly, then looked up toward the balcony.

Their eyes met across the expanse of the courtyard—two survivors of two different wars, bound together by blood, honor, and an unspoken promise.

Marin offered him a small, dangerous smile—the smile of a woman who was done hiding from the world.

She didn't get into the car. She stood her ground at the threshold of the empire, waiting for the king to descend the stairs so they could walk into the night together.
